North Devon Red Bus was created as a subsidiary part of Western National in January 1983 in the preparations for privatisation. Unsurprisingly, large numbers of the fleet were not red at all which caused some amusement at the time. The operation lasted for five years until subject to a management buy-out in 1988.
From then things got a little more complex, in North Devon the branding was still Red Bus. Elsewhere in east and central Devon the Tiverton & District or South Western fleet names were carried, probably due to the established Red Bus Services operation based at Clyst Honiton.
